I have created a series of shirts that
have mobility 2D barcodes on them. They
are readable by mobile phones. Someone can
use his or her phone to scan the barcode on
the shirt. The scan will translate the barcode
to reveal the profile of the person
wearing the shirt. You can see the persons
age, name, interests, or whatever they
chose as their profile.
All the QR codes used in this project are excerpts
from my diary. I printed them on tee shirts
and bags knowing they would be seen by hundreds of
people. The idea of presenting something as private
as a diary to the public in a code that requires
specific technology to read is a contradiction.
The message here is still private to a certain
level, but presented in a very public way.
My first intention was to create interaction
between people. If you see a shirt with QR code on
it you use your phone to decode it and find
something out about the person wearing the shirt.
Whether what is revealed is a profile, diary
entree or favorite quoteit is a silent and simplified
introduction of one person to another. My second
intention was the personal factor. Anyone
interested can create their own code by
visiting web sites like KAYWAand
QUICKMARKor they can send me their
personalized entree so I can create
the code for them. For $20 I will create a shirt with the
personal encoded entree.
I hope to expand on this idea and put barcodes on
ties, backpacks and jewelry. A similar project exists and
is described at SHYNO. Instead of using barcodes, these
shirts have sms code. If you are interested in the
person wearing the shirt you can go to the website and send a
message to the person. I don't plan on this being a "matchmaking"
project. I am more interested in using the barcodes to represent
random words and ideas that might trigger conversations between people.
